A Passion for History....

This year I have been given the extraordinary privilege of coaching Destination Imagination to a group of second graders at IHM/Saint Luke's Catholic School. This group is very motivated and I believe has the creativity and the ambition to excel at this year's challenge.

For the first couple of weeks, our primary focus was on instant challenges. These activities are short, usually running no longer than ten minutes, where students demonstrate their abilities/skills in creativity, logic, building, and teamwork in order to finish a challenge successfully. Some of the challenges have been things such as:

1) Students will brainstorm as many ways that you can use an every day item such as a spoon or a straw.

2) Students will have five minutes to create a structure that is 3 feet tall with only the items in the bag. They must also explain what you did and how you did it.

3) Students will have five minutes to build a sculpture out of leggos that best describes their school and create a skit that highlights their main points.

4) If you could invent anything, what invention would you make that would make the world a better place? Why do you feel that this particular invention is so important?

5) Students will have ten minutes to create a skit that demonstrates what true teamwork would look like.

Most of these challenges combine building, teamwork, creativity, and critical thinking skills.
